element | pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances

compound | pure substance that consists of 2 or more elements chemically combined

mixture | consists of 2 or more substances that not chemically combined

- mixtures can be separated using physical methods but compounds can only be separated using chemical methods

- mixtures retain the properties of the compomenets but compounds have different properties from its constituent elements
